From the United Reform Synagogue Ida and Howard Wilkoff Department of Synagogue Management’s Rabbinic Transition Management Facilitator’s Manual:

Change is never easy.  By definition, it is disruptive to all whom it affects. It produces anxiety, huge emotional swings and great uncertainty.
It is also time for deep reflection and vulnerability.
The period of transition for a congregation from one rabbi to another is such a time.  It will, in one way or another, impact hundreds of lives.

When handled properly and effectively, transitions can be exceptionally positive experiences for congregants, their exiting spiritual leaders and their incoming rabbis.
